What Makes a Person Successful?

Intrinsic motivation, strong desire, willing to succeed, ambitious personality of a person, and many other personal factors might affect how successful you are in this life. However, according to Griswold (2014), some external factors might also affect your success.
First, the month you were born in is crucial. By millions of research done on "relative-age effect," "month of birth bias," or "birth-date effect", it was suggested that people born “right before an annual cutoff date for starting school or sports” tend to be less successful because naturally they are a year younger and physically, emotionally, and intellectually weaker than other members of the group (Griswold, 2014). Another theory in Litvinenko (2012) suggested by numerologists says that the sum of numerals on your date of birth might reveal the sphere where you can be successful in. One of the examples of successful people is Bill Gates, who was born in October, which is a sign of a successful man according to Griswold (2014); according to the theory of numerologists (Litvinenko, 2012) his number is 4, which means that he is good at counting, that might have affected him to become the chairman of Microsoft. Second, are you the eldest, middle, youngest, or the only child in your family? This is also a key factor that affects your success. First – borns tend to be more ambitious, competitive, and leaders, whereas middle children are strong team builders and partners. Youngest children usually perform creative roles, and only children are alike first – borns generally take high positions and have qualities of leaders (Griswold, 2014). Third, according to latest research findings public schools outperform private schools, because public schools are more organized and stricter, whereas private school students already come from wealthy backgrounds and have almost all they want (Griswold, 2014). So, expensive is not always the best. Fourth, which is very interesting is that a student’s performance in math might result in his or her salary (Griswold, 2014). Higher performance in math equals higher salary. Fifth, people from military background are likely to become leaders, because they have excellent management style and are best stayers, they are more likely to endure tough times (Griswold, 2014). Next, good and healthy sleep is also pivotal for success (Griswold, 2014). It is suggested that sleep – deprived people tend to perform worse in comparison to those who sleep well. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Researchers say that early birds outperform night owls, because people who work in the evenings must have bad time management, whereas early birds complete assigned tasks as early as possible and tend to perform better throughout the day (Griswold, 2014). One of the most amazing factors of success is the height of a person – the higher the person the more competitive and commanding he or she seems to be (Griswold, 2014). For instance, Steve Jobs was over six feet tall. Charisma and how good – looking you are also plays an important role in your success path. The more attractive a person, the more people like him or her and the higher chances he or she has to succeed (Griswold, 2014). Research also shows that people who have shorter names or who have shortened their long names tend to become leaders in comparison to those who prefer to stay with their long names (Griswold, 2014). One of the examples is our instructor’s name – Phil instead of Philip.
To sum up, many of the factors affecting your success are connected to education. So, the role of education in success plays an important role undoubtedly. As we tend  to believe, the more knowledgeable you are the more more successful you will be. But not only education affects our success as you see. So, count your chance rate of success scale. Do you think they work? Research shows they do.

  1. Dear Araylim, I see that researchers have counted everything except the color of one's teeth and the length of one's fingers. Superstitious people believe in everything and they as a rule, pay attention to the time of the day one was born, color of his/her eyes, how large and small his/her ears are... In reality they have nothing to do with whether a person is success or not. Gates and Jobs are just coincidence. What really matters is the tenderheartedness and charisma; the way how one looks like and behaves tells a lot. Now people tend to think that the first impression is not false, which is why in business world much attention is given to the dress code, one's image and behavior. My recommendation to a person who wants higher chances to succeed is to try to look attractive, tidy, organized and stay moderately emotional. To know how to respond, when to contradict and where to come to consensus.

  2. Dear Arailym, thank you for the post! The factors mentioned above are very surprising for me. Actually, I have never thought about these factors affecting success of a person except education. I do trust that education and knowledge can make person prosperous and successful. Of course, there are other factors such as health and family which are more believable, but not always they can work. Besides these factors, religious people believe that each person has destiny decided by God. If person is successful or unsuccessful, it is assumed that this was assigned beforehand to the fate of a person, for instance, sometimes non-educated people become millionaires or vise versa. There are a number of internal and external factors affecting success, but not all factors work for everyone!

  3. Dear Arailym, I found this blog very interesting and surprising as well. I haven't known that even person's name impacts on success. However, I would disagree with Griswold's theory that the first-borns in a family distinguish themselves as ambitious and competetive. I know plenty of families where the eldest children tend to be more shy and quiet, whereas later offsprings demonstrate their leadership skills as often as possible. In my opinion, success is the abstract understanding. People measure it differently, and concpetualize according to their own philosophy and values.

  4. My goodness gracious me! I will not be surprised if the lates research shows that the people who see "white and golden dress" are more successful in comparison to the ones who see "blue and black dress". According to your post my husband should the most successful person in the world, as he sleeps 15-20 hours a day. You mentioned Mr. Montgomery to be successful because of his name. How about Mr. Shigeo Katsu and our Dean Professor Reagan or Professor Kerimkulova, who are not that tall? Your post is another proof that personality is the main indicator of the success. In addition, the persception of success also matters. For example, what does succes mean for you? if you ask me, I am already successful being a mother, a wife and a student at NU.

  5. This is a great debate about some sociological and psychological issues, and the comments show some distinct views about how superstitions and belief play an important role in many of these interpretations. Be sure to connect your topic to education, perhaps by showing how these belief systems or ideas about personal success influence students in the classroom, or teachers'/classmates' role in creating or reinforcing certain character traits.

A note about organization. This short essay relies mainly on a list-style organization pattern (firstly, secondly, etc), which can seem elementary and simplistic. To add a layer of depth, see if you can group these examples into 3 categories and show how they connect (compare/contrast, broad/narrow, chronological, etc). Each paragraph then will stand more solidly on a conceptual foundation and your whole essay will be more cohesive.

  6. wooow! impressed! Thanks a lot for your guideline of success! I enjoyed! From my point of view, success is to abstract hypothesis. Of course facts and list mentioned by you might have sense, but at the same time we shouldn't forget about family status, parents knowledge, how particular family value knowledge and success, environment, friends, first teacher or may be some turning point in life and etc. Overall, we should keep in mind that perception of success may vary. How do each person, community, race or country rationalize about success?! ;)

  7. Well, looks like I have low chances for becoming successful... 04:35 is the best time for commenting a blog, especially when you're a desperate night owl. I wouldn't go along with all characteristics of a successful person mentioned in the post. For example, public-private school link might be quite opposite in some countries. Height is another interesting issue. In my life, I've met so many tall losers I can't even count. This, of course, does not tell anything about your writing, which was a well-structured nice list. This only means contexts and details matter.

  8. Thank you very much for the post! I am really impressed...I have not even thought about some factors that can make a person successful. As for me, success is an amalgam of your ambitions and efforts to make these ambitions become true. Every time when I cannot reach anything, I say to myself this beautiful saying : Never give up to try, never try to give up!
