Types of Learning Disabilities
During my data collection at special
corrective school I found out that there are different types of learning disability. I am not writing about physical or
mental disabilities, but there are also some types of learning disabilities. By
posting this blog, I hope to raise awareness among parents, as parents are
often the first to see early signs of learning disabilities.
Learning disabilities are believed to be
caused by neurological differences in the way the brain processes information.
People with learning disabilities are actually as intelligent as their peers.
In fact, it is even possible to have a learning disability and be gifted as
well. The actual difference is that people with learning disabilities learn
differently and may need a variety of instructional practices to learn
effectively. Several types of
learning disabilties will be described in this post.
1. Dyslexia. People with learning
disabilities in basic reading have difficulty understanding the link between
letters and sounds. As a result, the learning disabled cannot decode words or
use phonics skills to sound out words. Reading is physically and psychologically
draining for dyslexic people
2. Dysgraphia is a type of
learning disability affecting the ability to recognize forms in letters, to
write letters and words on paper and to understand the relationship between
sounds, spoken words and written letters
3. Dyscalculia. People with
learning disabilities in basic math do not understand the relationship between
numbers and the quantities they represent. Understanding math concepts and
real-world math applications such as in telling time are also difficult for people
with learning disabilities in basic math
If you are a parent, remember
this information. Take close attention to your child and remember that early
intervention may ease your and your child's life!

As for me before selected for this program I have no idea about inclusive education. I thought that all children with disabilities are fall in the category of inclusion. However, now I see that I was mistaken. As a teachers and future parent it is important for have clear understanding of what inclusion means and what types are existing. When I studied at school on the ceremony of first bell, the younger brother of my classmates (he had Down syndrome) presented me a beautiful bench of flyovers with the smile on his face, but I ignore him. And I still blame myself for this action and remember the face of his mother full of pain. So, we need to change our perceptions toward people with disabilities and make them feel comfortable in society..
