Are you morning lark or night owl?

I consider that the majority of our students in our cohorts are owls, because whenever I ask late at midnight about some issues, I receive an immediate response via favorite messenger. Some students tend to study at night (especially Malika), some wake up early in the morning (like Gulnur M) and study in the morning. Those who study at night beliefs that their brain works actively and efficiently at night rather than in morning but some individual becomes sleepy and prefer studying in the morning. But I know students who cannot even sleep at all during nights and days and I am not sure to which groups they refer to. Both conditions are efficient to study if individuals follow three simple rules: good time-management, well-balanced sleep time and sufficient cuisine.
Each opinion has its own reasoning and advantages to convince you. For example if you are a lark, then you will have more energy and ability to concentrate during the daytime after having a good sleep. Next privilege over owls is using the libraries, book shops which operate on day time only. Another undeniable advantage is being in contact with your instructors so it is much faster and easier to get in touch with them. Moreover, it is healthier to study on day time using natural lights, because artificial lights affect proper operation of brains and influence on sleep condition.

Owls think that night is beneficial time to study when nobody disturbs them from their tasks and it is an ideal time to fully concentrate on the assigned work. If the library works at night, as our NU library, then it is perfectly works for you as you can concentrate and study in silence because library is empty at night. Moreover, there are fewer distractions at night. This approach refers especially to married people. Social network along with your family are asleep and nothing is on your way to study.
Whatever your style is every individual should work according to their lifestyle considering time-management skills, proper resting and eat nutrient rich products.
Please share your ideas on what person you are and how you plan your day to become effective with your assignments.

  1. Thank you, Assiya for bringing up such a thought-provoking topic. I was just recently thinking about different working regimes of each indvidual and how we can affect them or change if neede. Last term I was studying in the "night owl" regime as all day long we had classes, meetings, some personal business to do, so...the only time left to study was night. But lets admit that at 3-4 am our brain stops working properly - the speed of thinking is decreasing and our eyes are tired. Moreover, nighttime is when vital biological processes are happening, so I truly believe that being awake during this time is highly harmful for our health. Probably, that is why I felt myself constantly tired and asleep. But once I pushed myself to go to bed not late than 12 am, everything has changed. Of course, it will take some time to adjust, but it worth it. In general I just wanted to say that all people can change their own regime if they want to, not chaining themselves to labels "lark" and "night owl".

  2. Assiya, thank you for such interesting topic. Of course, people are divided into owls and larks and it is in their character, habits of life style. However, my personal life experience showed that it depends on your current status, I mean job or study, being married and having children are also influence on when you wake up or go to sleep. Personally, I am a "night owl", I like to go around till late night and then wake up late. But, I had to change my habits, first of all due to motherhood, because children's classes start at 8 am, then due to my study. Usually I do my assignments at night because it is the most quiet period and nobody disturbs me but whenever I go to bed I have to be awake at 7 am in the morning. So, sometimes people cannot afford themselves to have their own regime because they have other responsibilities.

  3. Thanks Assiya for the post! I dont know others, but I can be either a lark or an owl. Usually I am a ''lark": my brain works better and productively in the morning rather than in the evening. But when I have "a week for deadlines" I become "a night owl". And after this week, I feel dog tired. So I think being a night owl is not for me because after the-exhausted-week I need time for recovery. Yes, I agree with Aizhanjan, that it depends on situation. When you have family it is hard to control your regime. Moreover, in my opinion, the place also plays an important on these issues. For example, in Astana usually I feel myself sleepy, tired, not energetic, but when I go to my hometown (South of KZ) it is absolutely different. I get up earlier, become active and energetic.
Overall, every person has his own regime. And it is difficult to say that you belong to that particular type of person.

  4. Assiya,

You know, before I didn't know that such things existed, I think people start to take the issue seriously when they know the names for them))). I don't know what type of person I am, but I know exactly I am not a lark. Here, in Astana, especially in our dorm I understood that it is impossible to a lark, because of building constructions everywhere, but when they do that for 24hours, I believe you cannot define yourself as any type))).
But to be serious, I don't know when I am really energetic, I think at night. But I noticed that, when it is necessary I can work in the mornings too or day and night sleepless, depending on the responsibility on me and importance of the issue...
And when there are holidays, I became even the 4th non-existing type of a person, who sleeps early and wakes up late...)))))

  5. Assiya, thanks for your post!
I don't usually plan my day in details but like to start my day in the morning so that by the afternoon I have done a lot. That's what I call a productive day. But sometimes I don't sleep at night because of our study and I drop out of my daily schedule. Then I will act according to the situation.
I really like your saying: "Whatever your style is every individual should work according to their lifestyle considering time-management skills, proper resting and eat nutrient rich products."
I think these things make a person healthier by reducing the stress.

  6. I sometimes work till 01:00 am but then I go to sleep. Does it mean that I am a night owl? Or to be called a night owl means to work the whole night after the 12:00 and in the morning go to study and sleep after it. I am sure that those who work the entire night are definitely night owls. However, is it a life style or a bad habit of individuals who have weak time management?
I am not interested now in writing the facts about the harm of working during sleep time. All this information can be found by just googling. I am wonder how those people who work during the whole night feel themselves in the morning in classes. Is their productivity better than those who keep a normal regime?

    1. Ayan, I can answer your question! I mentioned which type I am above...
There are some time periods when you feel awful during the morning classes and you just want to close your eyes and sleep. But, you know, these periods depend on how interesting the subject is!))) And accordingly the productivity, too.

  7. Interesting! I definitely can label myself as a late owl. It is not my own choice, but that is my nature. I end up sleeping almost at the dawn. It is time when inspiration comes to my and I can write and do assignments. I always have a feeling that I want my day last longer and longer. When I go to sleep early I feel like my day is spent in vain, i could do more things. I am always advised to give up this habit as there are possible medical implications of it. However, whenever I tried to do so I failed.

  8. Assiya, thank you for such interesting post! Topics you choose always touch something I can freely comment on without thinking that I am not competent to write anything. I am sure that the regime depends on time-management and tasks. However, most of the time I am a night owl, because after 1 am I feel myself more energetic and can sit and do my homework. Then, I study two or three hours and go to sleep till 9-9:30 in the morning. In order not to expose myself to stress after only 4 or 5 hours of rest I prefer to sleep in the afternoon or from 10 to 12 pm. So, overall I sleep 7-8 hours per day, which is normal, I suppose.

  9. Great job, Assiya!
As you have already mentioned it I am 100% lark. I cannot force myself to study at nights even there are a final week and upcoming deadlines. I guess this habit comes from my school years. As I attended boarding school the strict rules did not allow anyone to sit in the classrooms after 23p.m. as everyone had to go to bed this time. But we could wake up early in the morning to do our home tasks. Later when I studied at university my mother used to say that my health is more important than my study and encouraged me to go to sleep early. However sometimes when I need to finish my assignments and sit till 2or 3 a.m. I often feel that it is not productive work then I go to sleep and in the morning do the same thing two times faster.
